WordPress makes llms.txt easier than most platforms. Depending on which plugins you already use, you can have a file live in a few minutes without touching code. Here are three ways, from easiest to most hands-on.
Before you start
Check whether you already have one: visit yoursite.com/llms.txt or run your address through our validator. Some SEO plugins turn the feature on by default, so you may be further along than you think.
Option 1: Use the SEO plugin you already have
Several popular WordPress SEO plugins can generate llms.txt from your existing pages and keep it updated when you publish. Menus change between versions, so if something below doesn't match, search the plugin's help docs for "llms.txt".
Yoast SEO
- Update Yoast SEO to the latest version.
- Go to Yoast SEO → Settings → Site features, find AI tools, and turn on llms.txt.
- Save. Optionally choose which pages to include with manual page selection.
Yoast notes the feature isn't available on WordPress multisite, and that file-permission problems on the server can stop the file being written.
All in One SEO (AIOSEO)
- Go to All in One SEO → Sitemaps and open the LLMs.txt tab.
- Make sure it's enabled (AIOSEO enables it by default) and adjust the title, description and which content types are included.
- Optionally enable llms-full.txt, a longer version with more content.
Rank Math
Rank Math also offers an llms.txt feature. Check Rank Math's documentation for where to switch it on in your version, then review which post types it includes.
Tip: plugin-generated files are convenient but generic. Open the result and make sure the summary line actually describes your business and that your most important pages are near the top.
Option 2: Write it yourself and upload it
If you want full control over the wording, write the file by hand:
- Create it with our free llms.txt generator and click Download llms.txt.
- Log in to your hosting control panel (cPanel, Plesk or your host's dashboard) and open File Manager.
- Open the folder that contains
wp-config.php. That's your site's main folder. - Upload
llms.txtthere. - Visit
yoursite.com/llms.txt. You should see plain text, not a web page.
If an SEO plugin is also generating llms.txt, turn its feature off first so the two don't conflict.
Option 3: Ask your developer or host
Not comfortable with File Manager? Send the file to whoever looks after your site. Our generator has an Email it to my developer button that writes the email for you, with the file included and instructions on where it goes.
Check that it works
Whichever route you take, run your site through the validator. The most common WordPress problems we see are:
- A web page instead of a text file. A security or redirect plugin is catching
/llms.txtand showing a page. The validator flags this as "Web page instead of a file." - Caching. You changed the file but still see the old one. Clear your caching plugin (WP Rocket, LiteSpeed Cache and so on) and any CDN cache.
- Short links. Links like
/serviceswork, but full addresses (https://yoursite.com/services) are safer for AI tools.
Then keep an eye on it
WordPress sites change constantly: plugin updates, theme switches, migrations. Any of them can break the file without warning. List your site on LLMs Ledger for free, or choose Nightly and we'll email you the moment it changes or breaks.
